One day we’ll be together again. Just like Pyramus and Thisbe. We’ll die for love, not fear or pain or regret or because those old childhood wounds won’t stop bleeding and become too much to hold in anymore, too painful to live with for even another moment, but for love, Betty, for love—and that’s what will set us free. Finally, we’ll be free. Together. Forever. Dreams no more.
Beneath the stones, beneath the earth, Laurent screamed, clawing at the sides of that old well. I forced him away, silencing his hideous screeches and pushing him back into the darkness as I clung desperately to what little remained of my sanity.
I focused on Betty, still there, so beautiful and smiling at me.
Sleep, my love. And when you open your eyes, I’ll be there.
As the vision of her faded into the early morning mist, I wiped my eyes with bloody hands and whispered a final goodbye.
For just a second, I felt Betty’s breath, warm and soft in my ear, telling me everything would be all right.
And for the first time since I’d lost her, I believed it just might be.
Without looking back, I left the dead to their graves and walked away through the rain, out of darkness and toward the slowly rising sun of a new day.
